Featured Install: Olivia O’Bryan in interiors mag

The new issue of interiors magazine hit our mail box this morning, and we loved the familiar beauty of Olivia O'Bryan's installation that was featured as "An Ethereal Vision."  Here's the link to the article on the interiors magazine digital edition. Olivia sourced many pieces for this project from PierceMartin, and we found several of them throughout the article.  As it turns out, Olivia was up from Vero Beach shopping our Atlanta showroom this morning right when Chip came in with the magazine, which she hadn't seen yet!  Congratulations to Olivia for the beautiful feature in a publication that consistently fills its pages with beautiful interior design.  Pick up a copy for yourself, or flip through the digital version that is linked above.

Featured Item: Betel Nut Container

Betel nut containersUnique accessories, such as this brass betel nut container circa 1900, are a great way to dress up and add interest to nooks, crannies, shelves, and tables.

This betel nut container is of the Maranao people, in the Mindanao region in the southern Philippines.  Betel nut boxes can still be found in the Philippines, but early examples like the one featured above have become increasingly scarce and hard to come by.  Betel nut, for those unfamiliar, is a mild stimulant that is chewed throughout the Asian continent.  The almost ceremonial and habitual chewing of the betel nut usually involves four ingredients: areca nut (bunga), fresh pepper leaves (buyo), powder lime (apug), and damp tobacco leaves. The white residue is slaked lime (Calcium Hydroxide), which releases the alkaloid in the Betel Nut.

This is a fine old box made in the early 20th century. Both the Fowler Museum at UCLA (catalog item number X79-15a,b) and the Smithsonian Institute (museum catalog number 383314) have very similar examples of this same type of betel box in their collection.

Rare and storied home accessories like this waiting for you on shelf, in a cabinet, or on a table in a PierceMartin showroom near you.

Happy 2010!

- We're happy to be ringing in the New Year with great positivity circulating throughout the industry!  One particularly positive note is the buzz generated by Stephen Wood's Oyster Shell lamp, featured in the current issue of Veranda magazine.  We returned to our operations center after a revitalizing Holiday Break, to discover a back-log of inquiries about the lamp and its availability.

The lamp's creator, Stephen Woods, has a passion for creating unique lighting pieces.  Stephen found this cluster of oyster shells attached to a piece of discarded rebar in exactly this formation, and brought it home to weather in the sun and rain for 14 months.  Once the weathering process was complete, Stephen permanently secured the shells in place with an allweather cement and completed his vision for this piece of functional art.  Stephen says that he has another similar cluster waiting for "creative attention", but otherwise this piece is truly unique.  Available exclusively through PierceMartin.

Studio B5B Collection by Tish Mills

Anyone who has ever traveled I-75 past Chattanooga, TN has seen the signs that read, "See Rock City." Well that was one of the first things that came to mind after Chip Cheatham set up this display of our own rock city, the Studio B5B Collection by Tish Mills accessories and lighting in the Atlanta showroom.  Some of the colorful and intriguing specimens of fossils, semi-precious stones, and geodes that Tish finds are transformed into beautiful table lamps, chandeliers, sconces, or candle holders;  Other specimens are left "raw", to be displayed in a niche or on a shelf.  Pieces shown here are displayed on PierceMartin #5540 Bamboo Motif Etagères.
