Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles March issue

We received our copy of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles today, and it's a beaut!  Great job as always Clint on the issue, the show house, and the print publication debut (we think) of Lady Bird!  The show house was beautifully photographed by Erica George Dines, and we of course love the shot of the media room, with interior design by PierceMartin president Chip Cheatham, using PierceMartin furnishings and artwork by Atlanta artist Tim Hunter.  Photography by Erica George Dines

We also loved the feature on Atlanta interior designer & tastemaker Amy Morris, who - we couldn't help but notice - is sitting at her PierceMartin Iron Ring coffee table on page 13.

ADAC & ASID Student Day 2010

ASID Student Symposium at ADAC

We hosted a group of Georgia design students for lunch today in the PierceMartin Atlanta showroom for  the ADAC & ASID Student Day.  We always love having the opportunity to meet and talk with the next generation of great designers. The students started the day with a keynote by Kerry Howard, Principal, Howard House Interiors and Top Design alumnus.

I wanted to create a handout for our group, and rather than just give them a flier (although there was an overview of our Allweather collection on the back), I wanted to create a list of tips - things that I would want to know if I were about to embark on my career journey as a designer.  I think these can really apply to anyone entering a creative field, and while none of it is earth-shattering I enjoy lists like these and I decided to share it here as well:

  • Remember that your designs and the products that you use are your reputation.  Using quality products from trusted showrooms benefits your reputation and increases your clients’ satisfaction.
  • Build connections within the industry early and often.  Being an active member of ASID is an excellent way to meet and build relationships with designers and suppliers.  Shop ADAC showrooms before you book clients, so you are ready on a moment’s notice when they ask you how you envision their space.
  • Be true to your own style and design instincts.  If you like what you create, there is a good chance that other people will like what you create – now you just have to find them.
  • Listen to your clients, learn their style, and incorporate it into their spaces.  Once your clients trust that you understand what they want, they will give you more freedom to create for them, and will call you again and again to do more work.
  • Establish your online identity as a professional with your own domain, website, and blog.  Leverage your presence and connections on social media sites to tell the world about your talents.  Update your sites often.
  • Build your portfolio, and take every opportunity to document projects and stages of progress.  No detail is too small, since someday it may be illustrative in communicating ideas and benefits to your clients.
  • Study business, and the business of interior design.  Talking to your peers and fellow ASID members about business issues can help you face difficult business decisions, since there is good chance that they have faced the same issues.
  • Solicit testimonials from satisfied clients.  Testimonials and word-of-mouth are the strongest form of advertisement that you can’t buy.

After lunch, the students attended a panel discussion with designers:

  • Anne Vincent, ASID, Moderator
  • Melanie Millner, ASID
  • Andrew Harris, ASID
  • Beri Hancock Irving, ASID
  • Alison Levino-Jones, ASID
  • Ann Wisniewski, ASID
  • Phillip Jefferies, ASID

with each discussing their own area of specialty.  After the panel discussion, the students then explored ADAC further.

Thanks to our docents, Atlanta interior designers Linda Pittam of Pittam Associates, Inc. and Clair Pardo.  And thanks especially to the students!

Featured Install: Olivia O’Bryan in interiors mag

The new issue of interiors magazine hit our mail box this morning, and we loved the familiar beauty of Olivia O'Bryan's installation that was featured as "An Ethereal Vision."  Here's the link to the article on the interiors magazine digital edition. Olivia sourced many pieces for this project from PierceMartin, and we found several of them throughout the article.  As it turns out, Olivia was up from Vero Beach shopping our Atlanta showroom this morning right when Chip came in with the magazine, which she hadn't seen yet!  Congratulations to Olivia for the beautiful feature in a publication that consistently fills its pages with beautiful interior design.  Pick up a copy for yourself, or flip through the digital version that is linked above.

Featured Install: Christmas House (final days Dec. 2-6)

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House media room

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House media room

I stopped by the Christmas House first thing this morning and, while I was fluffing sofa cushions and watering plants in the media room, for a moment I was transported back in time.  I relived those early Christmas mornings of my childhood when I would wake up before everyone else and quietly bask in the light of the tree and the decorations while anticipating the coming events of the day.   Maybe it was the frost of the morning, or the lingering tryptophan still pumping through my system, or the morning light reflecting off of the bulbs and sundry decorations in the adjacent Boxwood Boutique; It was most likely all of these combined with my immersion into the inspiring spaces created by the twenty or so designers involved in Christmas House.  Be sure to take a moment for yourself this week to find inspiration and perhaps your own memories at the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House.

Featured Install: 2009 Christmas House

PierceMartin furniture in the media room at the AH&L 2009 Christmas House

The Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles 2009 Christmas House opened November 14th, and is running through December 6th.  Chip installed PierceMartin furniture in the media room, where the carpet, projection screen, and a game table (not pictured) were the only existing elements.  At the left are the Capistrano wicker club chair and ottoman with an Indo Bamboo drink table.  The custom storage bench, in front of the screen, was fabricated from an old wood trough and features a raffia seat and green glass handles.  A Malibu wicker sofa and slipper chairs complete the traditional seating, while banana leaf floor pillows provide overflow seating.  A Teak and Bamboo octagonal table, Manhattan drink tables and Manhattan end table provide surfaces and storage.  "Birds in Peril" wall art by Tim Hunter provides a graphic yet non-competing background.  Iron Hook floor lamps with drum shades in raffia light the room from both sides of the sofa.

At the back of the room, this section of wall sits between two doors leading to another room.  Chip chose to carry the red color of the upholstery on the wicker furniture to the back wall with this framed old Chinese wedding skirt.  Below the bridal skirt, Chip played subtle-chic with a black Caryatid iron console against the black wall.

Custom Finishing: Chelsea nightstands

These Chelsea nightstands are usually only seen in their standard finish, with Chelsea distressed rattan and natural (blonde) Pandan weave. We loved applying this distressed custom finish for an Altanta designer & friend. The bone accents really pop against the dark finish.
